Overview

LINZ manages around 2 million hectares of Crown-owned land. We manage this ‘Crown estate’ to deliver the greatest benefits to all New Zealanders, both for today and in future.
The Crown estate includes:
• land held for Treaty settlements
• the beds of lakes and rivers
• forest land
• high country pastoral land in the South Island
• residential and commercial properties, closed schools, courthouses and prisons
LINZ manage around 1.2 million hectares of Crown pastoral land in the South Island high country, stretching from Marlborough to Southland, including pastoral leases. The Crown Property Management – Pastoral team at LINZ supports the Commissioner of Crown Lands (CCL) manage pastoral leases, through carrying out property inspections, processing consents to carry out certain activities, and conducting lease renewals and rent reviews.

Pastoral Land Administration refers to the operational administration of Crown pastoral leases and licences, as governed by the Land Act 1948 (Land Act) and the Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 (CPLA). The services required are:
Applications for Consents
When a request for consent from a leaseholder or third party is received by LINZ for an activity on Crown Pastoral Land.
Pastoral leaseholders and other occupiers/users are required to obtain consent, from the Commissioner of Crown Lands to undertake a range of discretionary and non-discretionary activities under the Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998 (CPLA) and Land Act 1948. The objective of this service is for the Supplier to gather and analyse information required to report and make recommendations to LINZ whether to grant consent. Applications are processed within contracted timeframes and adhere to the Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998, the Land Act 1948, applicable standards and LINZ instructions.
